The 6 "SENSITIVE" Periods of a Young Child

.
The 6 "Sensitive" periods of a young child are Dr. Maria Montessori's building schedule which outlines what and when faculties are developed:

1. Sensory Perception - birth through 5 years. It is through the senses, that the child builds his intellect.

2. Language Acquisition - begins at about 3 months of age.
The child's awareness and sensitivity to the human voice, the sight of the human mouth speaking, and to the written word.

3. Order - 6 months-5 years. External order will facilitate the child's development of an internal order.

4. Small Detail - 2-4 years.
To awaken the mind's control over the child's attention, fostering the ability to focus on that small stimulus to the exclusive of all else.

5. Coordinating Movement - 2+1/2-4 years.
It is here where the child becomes better at walking and handling things. Through Practical Life Activities, the child develops his fine motor skills, his gross motor skills, develops his coordination and balance, coordinating his movements.

6. Social Relations - 2+1/2-6 years.
During this period, the child has a strong need to belong. The child will develop affections for others and friendships and is sensitive to manners and courtesy. It is in this period that is a peak time for teaching social graces, social etiquette and proper, acceptable social behavior.
